From the south of Spain, Tangier is the day trip: the fast ferry from Tarifa crosses the strait in about an hour and a quarter, and the trips spend the rest of the day on Cap Spartel, the Hercules Caves, the Kasbah and the medina. Chefchaouen is too far for a day from Spain. What changes from one listing to the next is where you join, whether lunch is part of it and how many hours you spend on a coach before the ferry.

What every ferry day has in common

The ferry leaves from Tarifa on all of these trips, except that said tangier tours can also start in Algeciras. In Tangier a bus or van takes the group out to Cap Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and to the Hercules Caves, then back into town for the Kasbah and the medina. Lunch is at a restaurant in town on the shared trips. Viajes Travelsur and Baleària end the day with about an hour of free time in the souk before the ferry back.

Shopping stops

The free hour in the souk is part of the programme on two of the Tarifa trips, and the VDT coach trip from the Costa del Sol stops at a bazaar and a traditional Berber pharmacy. Reviewers on the Tangier side describe sales pitches for leather, spices and carpets, while others write that they felt no pressure to buy. You do not have to buy anything; keep some euros or dirham for what you might want.

Two clocks

Morocco is an hour behind Spain from late March to late October and during Ramadan. Baleària gives its return sailings in Moroccan time, while the Viajes Travelsur listing names times without saying which clock it means. Check the time on your ticket twice. Wind in the strait can delay a crossing, and Viajes Travelsur warns that the return may leave from Tanger Med instead of the city port in bad weather.

Documents

Each operator sets its own rule for the ferry. Baleària accepts a national ID card from EU citizens, Viajes Travelsur asks for a passport for every traveller, and Naturanda and VDT need your passport number when you book. Our page on passport, ferry and practical tips lists them trip by trip.

What travellers say about the ferry days

Most reviewers write about their guides in Tangier, the lunch and the day across the strait. One guest from Málaga found the coach hours long compared with the time in town.

“It was a great day trip. The guide was amazing! Very knowledgeable and spoke so many languages for everyone in the group. The food was good and you had time to explore the city on your own as well. Highly recommend!”
Cristina · United States · April 2026 Tangier from Tarifa with lunch · Naturanda

Annett · Germany · September 2025 · translated review Tangier from Tarifa with lunch · Naturanda

Amanda · United Kingdom · August 2026 Morocco from Gibraltar · Amranitours
“Departure from Málaga, many hours on the coach. In reality, we were only in Tangier for 4 hours, and spent the rest of the time on the coach, on boats, and queuing. Very tiring and stressful. The coach doesn't make a single stop for a rest or to go to the toilet (admittedly, if it did, it would be …”
Verified traveller · Spain · March 2026 · translated review Tangier from the Costa del Sol · VDT

Michelle · United States · September 2026 Private Tangier tour from Tarifa or Algeciras · said tangier tours
